Mattewos (middle) pastored the church next door when I lived in Addis Ababa (1977-1983). I knew him and Itaferu (left)before they were married and count them among my closest friends. Ruth Cremer (right) heads up the translation and literacy work in the Kafa language. She is also a good friend. She always makes sure I am well-fed when I am in Addis Ababa. (September 2003)

Aari Translator Duba with Aari New Testament. Duba is a careful and consciencious worker. He has a pastor's heart and reaches out to those in need with gentleness and compassion.

Aari translator Fikadu, gifted preacher and skilled in public relations. He and Duba are God's answer to my prayer for capable, God-fearing, trustworty men who hate dishonest gain. (See Exodus 18:21 NIV)

Deggefu, who worked with Carolyn on the Gurage New Testament 1977-1983, is now involved in water development with the Word of Life (SIM-related) church. Here he joins us for coffee in the home of friends Mattewos and Itaferu.

Banna translator David lost most of his hearing in his late teens due to illness but makes good use of his hearing aid. He is gifted in language and the best speller on our team. He knows some Aari and says the Aari New Testament is easier for him to understand than the Amharic (national language).

Banna translator Getu, musician, artist and computer whiz. He is also a gifted preacher. (Sept. 2003) It has been a joy to watch him grow in his walk with the Lord and commitment to ministry.

Banna Translator Ayke (right) explains the Banna spelling rules to Sani (primer workshop participant, September 2003). Ayke worked in our clinic before joining the translation team. His maturity and gentleness are an encouragement to all of us.
